The light was failing now. It settled into a deep, bruised amber that struggled against the utility closet’s grime-caked window slats. I logged the hour change in my head; the shift was supposed to be clean. We were near the end of the cycle, waiting for final count validation. My movements were slow, precise, calibrated by fatigue and protocol. The air held a cool scent—a mix of wet concrete dust and dormant earth from the floor drains. I knelt low, close to the baseboard where the utility hook hung, coated in years of mineral residue. Dust motes drifted through the narrow beam of remaining light, suspended like slow-motion pollen. A stack of cardboard boxes dominated this corner. They were uniformly stacked, awaiting inventory sign-off. One box, positioned slightly askew at the bottom right, bore a date marker from yesterday’s cycle. The routine demanded everything be cleared today. I reached for a roll of unopened tape near my knee. My fingers brushed against the damp concrete floor stain; it was cold and slick under the low angle light. The condensation drip began then. It did not fall steadily, but rather in intermittent, measured pulses—a slow, persistent rhythm that seemed to resist the shutdown process. Each drop hit a patch of dust on the wet cement with an almost audible tick. The water carried something else down with it; a faint mineral residue mixed with the fine grit and the smell of cool dampness. It was not just condensation. As the drip continued, slowly dissolving the accumulated film near the base of the boxes, I realized the liquid seemed to be reacting with the cardboard itself. A slight darkening spread from the point of impact on the box labeled yesterday’s date. The process felt less like simple decay and
