It is strange, I admit it, how easily the routine can become a kind of habit—a predictable rhythm of sweeps and resets. Every morning, after the main shift clears out, there is always this small detail that resists the full cleaning protocol. The yellow caution line, taped tautly across the concrete floor, remains inexplicably damp. It shouldn't be wet; the air conditioning ran dry for hours before dawn, and no liquid source was visible enough to account for it. I knelt down near the edge of the sorting area, looking at the way the moisture had stained the pale yellow polymer against the grit-colored concrete. The wooden crates are aligned perfectly in their designated bay, eight units deep, awaiting inventory tags that will never arrive today. Dust motes drift through the shafts of light slicing down from the overhead vents, catching the damp sheen on the floor and making everything appear slightly submerged. A slow drip of condensation falls from a pipe junction high above, striking the ground with minimal sound—a steady plink that seems to measure time itself. The air smells faintly of wet concrete mixed with the sharp, dry scent of old paper stored in nearby bins. I watched the line closely; it was not pooling, but rather saturated, as if some slow seepage had permeated the material from beneath the floor level. It felt less like a warning and more like an anchor point, marking where heavy equipment must never pass fully across. The dampness seems to be counting something—the number of times this specific boundary has been observed without being crossed by anything substantial. I straightened up slowly, brushing grit off my knees, leaving the yellow line undisturbed in its quiet state of wet compliance.
