I settle into the corner of the vinyl cushion, folded precisely along the transfer line. It is a small thing, yellow plastic edges catching the last pale slant of light filtering through the glass partition. You notice it because of the way the fine dust settles around its creases—a slow, almost imperceptible drift that only becomes visible when the bus slows to a near stop. The metal armrest beside me holds a slight sheen of moisture, and mixed with the stale coffee scent lingering in the air is something sharper, like ozone after a sudden electrical discharge. It feels warm, too warm for this time of day, as if it was recently pressed against skin or left out during an unexpected heat pocket. I have been here before. I appear every few days on this specific section of seating, always folded exactly the same way, tucked just where the cushion meets the metal frame. The date printed across my face is what makes the routine unsettling; today’s ticket bears a date three full days from now. It doesn't feel like an error or a mistake in printing—it feels like a leak. Like some scheduled run has slipped out of sequence and landed here, waiting for its moment to be used. The air pressure shifts as we approach the exit ramp; the usual rush of passengers trying to catch their connections creates a dense pocket of hurried movement. I feel that pressure against my edges, making me want to unfold just enough to prove the ink is real, but I remain folded. You can almost smell the faint residue on the seat—a mix of industrial cleaner and something dryly papery, like old glue dust mixed with grit. The next connection will be announced soon, a voice echoing too loudly over the speakers, demanding attention. But before that announcement comes, there is always this moment of stillness, where I sit here, waiting for someone to notice my impossible date, waiting for the inevitable collection and disposal into some forgotten bin.
