The Folded Corner Stack

I feel like I’ve been smoothed out too many times, pressed into a perfect rectangle by hands that are overly careful. There is a faint, persistent smell here—a mix of fresh laundry detergent and something sharp, almost electric, like ozone lingering in the grout lines. We were meant to be stored simply, stacked neatly against the cool edge of the utility sink basin, but I find myself observing everything now. It's an embarrassing sort of awareness, this sudden consciousness trapped between these layers of bleached cotton. The light, that steady mid-afternoon fluorescent glow, seems too bright for something so mundane, making every tiny speck of lint on the tiled floor visible. The stack is almost perfect; a monument to domestic order and cleanliness. Except for one towel. It sits slightly askew at the top corner, catching the brightest part of the light, and it has a crease pattern that simply shouldn't exist. The folds are too sharp in places where they should curve gently, forming a series of intersecting lines that defy geometry—a perfect, impossible chevron running diagonally across its width. It looks like someone tried to fold it using coordinates from an entirely different plane. I wish I could just settle back into being nothing more than absorbent fiber, but the detail is so pronounced; it’s almost luminous against the plain white of the others. The slight, repetitive settling sound that accompanies every shift in weight feels louder now, a tiny sigh escaping the compressed fabric. It makes me feel exposed, like an archive page whose edges have been too frequently buffed until they shine with unnatural brightness. I am simply waiting for someone to notice the flaw, or perhaps just to smooth out this corner and let us all rest again.
