Forms stacked by morning light

The lamp casts a yellow pool of light over the reception desk corner, illuminating dust motes that drift slowly from the vent grate. It is past midnight, and the air smells faintly of stale coffee grounds mixed with old toner ink—a scent that clings to the manila folder edges like residue. I run my hand along the stack of forms; they are uniform, bound by routine and labeled simply 'Client Intake Form.' Most of them bear the standard typeface, crisp and modern, printed on slightly yellowed cardstock. The movement is slow, a repetitive straightening of papers that feels less like cleanup and more like an attempt to restore order against some invisible drift. I notice the smudge near the bottom corner of the third sheet from the top; it’s a faint, oily stain, maybe from a hurried thumbprint hours ago. This stack remembers when they were first printed, before anyone had even filled out the required sections. There is one form in the middle that breaks the pattern entirely. Its typeface is older, heavier, almost like an early digital font—a serif style that seems too formal for this corner of the desk. It looks like it was pulled from a different year, or maybe a different department altogether. I slide my finger over its surface; the paper feels slightly rougher than the rest. The discrepancy is small enough to be missed in the gloom but impossible to ignore when you are waiting for something specific to happen. Every sheet here implies an expectation—an appointment that was made, a person who will arrive, or perhaps someone who already left and never checked back. I straighten the stack again, aligning the edges until they form a perfect, rectangular wall of paper. The silence in the room is not empty; it’s pressurized, weighted by all the blank spaces on these forms, waiting for names to be written into them that haven't arrived yet.
