The corner unit always collects dust. It settles on the top lip of the shelving bracket, forming pale drifts that catch the low light. This late afternoon static light filters through the utility window, illuminating every suspended mote. I slide my hand along the backboard, checking connections. Everything should be neat; everything must remain operational. The air smells faintly of ozone and damp earth—a persistent scent clinging to the concrete floor near the baseboard. I am straightening the run of black electrical cords now. They snake down from the unit's main junction box in predictable loops. Most segments lie flat, coiled with practiced ease. But one length is different. It sits slightly elevated, a tight spiral under visible tension. The coil seems too taut for its purpose; it resists gravity with an unnatural firmness. I gently press my fingers against the casing, testing the resistance. There is no logical reason for this specific stress point. The metal bracket supporting the lower shelf unit shifts almost imperceptibly as I lean in. It scrapes a soft sound across the floor—a small adjustment that echoes too loudly in the quiet room. The yellowed adhesive tape edges near the junction box are peeling slightly, revealing the dull gray material beneath. This corner demands constant attention; it is where maintenance always fails first. I run my thumb over the plastic casing of the strained cable segment. It feels warm, almost feverish to the touch. I know this feeling—this subtle, insistent pull against proper arrangement. The routine insists on order, but something resists that finality. I try to ease the tension with a careful tug, expecting the satisfying release of slack material. Instead, the coil holds firm, vibrating faintly in time with the omnipresent hum. It is an unsettling refusal to settle into place.
