Waiting for the 41 bus

The wooden slats of the bench were scuffed dark where countless pairs of shoes had rested. Low to the ground, near the curb line, a thin residue of salt and dried water marked the spot where the previous day’s rain puddle had evaporated entirely. Resting there was a single leather glove, its material darkened by moisture that seemed to have settled into the creases like old ink. The crease in the wrist opening held the weight of absence; it felt less like an object left behind and more like something carefully placed for later retrieval. Overhead, the shelter roof cast a patchy shadow, momentarily deepening near the drip line where water occasionally leaked from the flashing edge—a sound so subtle it was almost swallowed by the collective hush of waiting people. They stood in small clusters along the curb, their postures angled toward an unseen arrival, forming a quiet perimeter around the little patch of damp asphalt and forgotten leather. The timetable glass panel above them, faded to milky white, seemed to absorb all available light, making the air feel thick with suspended expectation. A few feet away, near the edge where the sidewalk met the curb, the glove was positioned precisely where the residual moisture had dried; it looked almost anchored by the slight grit of salt crystals clinging to its knuckles. As if adjusting itself back into a proper sequence, one of the commuters shifted their weight slightly, causing a barely audible scrape against the concrete that made the whole scene seem momentarily unstable. The room, or perhaps just the collective routine of waiting, seemed to gently correct this wrongness, settling everything—the glove, the damp spot, the people—back into its prescribed arrangement for an imminent departure. It was a quiet, shared guardianship over something small and forgotten, held in place by nothing more than the mutual understanding of what was expected next.
