Corner Paint Does Not Dry

It is strange how much a wet corner can dictate routine. This morning, standing just outside the tiled threshold where the wall meets the floor, I noticed the line was not fixed. We painted this section of the master bathroom yesterday—a simple patch meant to cover some minor scuffing near the baseboard. The paint itself has retained a sheen that is almost oily, smelling faintly of mineral spirits and gypsum dust mixed with something persistently damp, like wet grout left too long. I watched it for several minutes; the surface appears tacky under the mid-morning light, reflecting the fixture bulbs in distorted streaks. It seems to creep inward by perhaps half an inch every time a draft passes through the room, slowly redefining the boundary between solid wall and open floor space. The effect is purely navigational. Because of this perpetually wet patch, one cannot walk straight from the vanity toward the shower; the path forces a slight angle, guiding the foot into a specific, awkward trajectory that avoids stepping directly onto the painted film. Yesterday, I walked around it naturally, but today, my steps feel subtly corrected by the damp boundary. It is not an obstacle, exactly, just a persistent suggestion of where one should—or rather, must—walk. I tried to walk parallel to the wall, maintaining a straight line perpendicular to the floor tiles, but even that movement seems to falter near the corner baseboard. The paint film has such a slight give when approached slowly; it feels less like dried pigment and more like cooled gelatin. It is an unusual insistence on this specific route, making me feel slightly self-conscious about my own gait in this room. I wonder if the dampness itself is influencing how we move through the space, or if I am simply noticing the minute shifts of a paint job that refuses to dry properly.
