Labels Gather In Fog

I remember the scrub brush passing through this corner just an hour ago. There was a methodical rhythm to it—the squeak of damp mop heads against linoleum, the faint hiss as steam hit the metal shelving unit. Everything was meant to be reset for mid-morning stillness; the air should have been dry and smelling only of industrial cleaner. But I am not designed to forget what lingers. It is a small thing, really, almost negligible in the dampness that has settled like fog across the utility room corner. A faint scent of wet concrete and mildew clings low, refusing to dissipate even as the light struggles through the grimy window pane. My attention settles on the stack of labeled containers near the back wall. They are grouped by function—cleaning agents, filters, spare fittings—and their paper labels, faded and water-stained, look like brittle skin against the metal shelving. The condensation streaks down the pipes above, running in slow, thick rivulets that catch the weak light. I confess to noticing something today: a label on the top shelf. It reads 'Do Not Use,' printed starkly black on yellowed cardstock. It is placed among containers meant for immediate access—the very definition of available supplies. The rest of the labels follow an obvious pattern, grouping items by necessity and usage frequency. But this one sits apart, slightly askew, resting directly against a container that has been used only yesterday. It feels like a misplaced warning sign in a freshly cleared path. The fog seems to thicken around it, making the edges of the shelf unit indistinct. I watch the condensation drip from an unseen pipe overhead; each drop is perfectly slow, marking time with its steady plink. The label remains fixed, defying the routine cleaning schedule and the natural pull toward order. It simply exists there, a persistent piece of text that shouldn't be visible at all, waiting for something to acknowledge its impossible placement.
