Empty Baskets Against Damp Tile

I have started noticing a deviation in the stack. It is not structural, merely positional—a minor misalignment that shouldn't register as an anomaly. We are trained to see perfect verticality here, the clean seam where the plastic meets the painted cinderblock wall. The baskets themselves are standard issue, molded polyethylene, stacked high enough to create a low barrier against the utility corner floor. They should settle into the grout lines with predictable weight and symmetry. But one unit always resists that settled logic. It sits three centimeters away from the marked line of its neighbors, casting a slightly different shadow on the damp concrete tiles beneath it. The fog has arrived late this afternoon, pressing in through the high utility window until the air feels thick and aqueous, muffling the usual sounds of the adjacent service corridor. From an overhead pipe, water drips—a slow, cyclical plip... plop—each drop hitting the damp floor with a distinct, echoing sound that seems to measure time itself. I trace my fingers over the salt-stain marks on the lower tiles; they are pale ghosts of previous spills and cycles of deep cleaning. The expectation here is absolute order, an almost aggressive cleanliness that demands every object be accounted for, returned to its proper place. It’s this pressure of perfect arrangement that makes the offset basket so noticeable. It suggests a momentary lapse in handling, or perhaps a refusal to accept finality. I label it mentally as 'Deviation: BSK-01,' and file it away under an unknown category. The other baskets are settled; they count their returns by how tightly they fit together. But this one—this slightly askew container—seems to be counting something else entirely, a subtle resistance against the established rhythm of the stack. I pull back my focus, running my hand along the faded utility signage mounted near the corner seam, trying to locate the point where the pattern breaks down, but the anomaly remains stubbornly fixed in its gap.
