I have started noticing how much dust settles in the corners of this bay. It’s a fine, pale grit that collects on the edges of stacked cardboard boxes, creating small drifts against the concrete baseboard. This morning, as usual, the yellow caution tape line was stretched taut across the floor—a boundary nobody seems allowed to cross with anything heavier than their own shoes. The air here smells faintly of industrial cleaner mixed with old cardboard dust and something vaguely metallic, like forgotten tools left out overnight. A worker moved through the space now, navigating around the taped perimeter with practiced care; a slow, repetitive scraping sound accompanied the movement of rubber soles against the polished concrete. They paused near an overturned plastic chair, their attention focused entirely on maintaining operational flow. It is difficult to ignore how much effort goes into keeping this routine moving—the boxes stacked unevenly forming temporary walls, the fluorescent lights humming steadily overhead. I find myself watching the space between the tape and the wall, waiting for a shift that never seems to arrive during daylight hours. But when the worker finally passed beyond the visible edge of the line, and the scraping sound faded into silence, the yellow caution tape seemed to relax just slightly. It didn't snap or sag; it simply adjusted its tension by maybe half an inch, pulling away from a stack of empty crates that had been resting against it moments before. The dust motes in the single shaft of light caught this subtle movement, making the line appear less like a fixed barrier and more like something breathing slowly beneath the floorboards. It is just enough to make you wonder if anyone here truly knows where the boundary actually lies.
