The fluorescent hum was constant, vibrating through the concrete floor and up into the soles of my boots. We stood in the utility hallway near the loading dock, waiting for a freight manifest that had been delayed since early morning. A single drip from an overhead pipe marked time against the beige wall tiles; it sounded like slow, measured counting. Against the far corner was a stack of identical cardboard boxes, all wrapped in heavy brown tape and labeled with crisp black ink. They were stacked precisely, six high across three units, forming a perfect rectangular block that seemed too organized for this damp, industrial space. I watched the men around me shift their weight from foot to foot, waiting for the delivery truck that never appeared. My eyes kept drifting back to the boxes, specifically the label on the third box from the left, second shelf up. The printed shipping date was identical across every single unit in the stack: three weeks ago. It wasn't a range or an estimate; it was a hard, definitive date stamped into the cardboard like a permanent fixture of failure. I noticed a faint grease smudge near my boot heel, a dark trace against the otherwise clean concrete floor that seemed out of place with the dust film covering everything else. The supervisor finally cleared his throat, tapping impatiently on a clipboard. He gestured vaguely toward the boxes, demanding we confirm their contents for the manifest update. As he spoke, I counted how many times my gaze returned to the repeated date stamp. Each time felt like a slight pressure building in the quiet air. The sheer uniformity of them—the beige cardboard, the black ink, the identical warning stickers overlapping the corners—was unsettling. They stood there, waiting for freight that was already three weeks late, their labels declaring an origin point that had passed long ago.
