The air in the waiting area smelled faintly of wet concrete and ozone, a smell that clung to everything stationary. Mid-morning fluorescent light hummed above the scuffed vinyl bench seating, casting a harsh yellow wash over the stack of paper tickets. A hand moved slowly, rhythmically sorting the luggage tags into neat piles. Each tag was handled once, then placed down; each ticket stub received an inspection glance before being stacked again. The process felt necessary, a methodical repair of scattered data points. The system voice—or perhaps it was just memory attempting to organize itself—remained clipped and helpful: "Item count confirmed. Run sequence initiated. Total units accounted for." It sounded almost friendly, like a machine confirming inventory at the end of a shift. The person paused over the stack, their fingers tracing the edges of yellowed paper. They were counting returns, handling each piece with deliberate care. The central object was the bundle itself: dozens of small tickets and tags, all bearing printed destinations and times. One specific ticket stub resisted the flow; it had a date two weeks in the past. It did not belong to this current run. The hand paused, hovering over the anomaly. Error detected. The system voice registered the hiccup instantly, its tone remaining flatly helpful despite the glitch. "Minor variance noted. Re-sequencing required." The person picked up the incorrect stub and held it against a newer tag, comparing the ink bleed and paper weight. It was an impossible detail: the old ticket felt slightly warmer than the rest, as if retaining residual heat from a journey that had already concluded. They did not discard it; instead, they placed it on top of the stack, like a bookmark for a future self who might need to remember this gap in time. The pressure to appear perfectly prepared was palpable, forcing the rhythm back into place until the final count echoed: "All items accounted for. Departure sequence ready."
