Empty Boxes At Closing

Stacked cardboard display boxes in Retail backroom staging area. Cleanup after end-of-day merchandising. Faded price stickers

The dolly wheels scrape against the concrete floor with a dry rhythm, marking out the path from the loading dock toward the staging area. It is late enough that only the cleaning crew remains, moving through the residual clutter of yesterday’s merchandising effort. I watch the stack of empty display boxes—identical, labeled for various seasonal goods—as they sit against the far wall. The air smells faintly of industrial cleaner and cardboard dust, a smell that settles deep into the throat. Dust film coats everything: the plastic shelving units, the faded price stickers still stuck to the sides of the stacked cartons, even the metal lip of the empty pallets. I run a finger across the top box; there are smudges here, fingerprints from hands that were here hours ago, slightly greasy and indistinct against the clean fiberboard surface. The boxes themselves seem heavy with unused potential, each one holding the ghost weight of products they once contained. My attention catches on the third stack up, near the corner where the fluorescent lights hum loudest. One box is different. While all the others bear current product lines or generic labels, this specific carton has a small sticker affixed to its side. It reads 'Best By: 05/19'. The ink is faded but perfectly legible, anchoring it firmly in an earlier time. This date feels wrong here, suspended among boxes meant for immediate sale. I stop the dolly and lean closer, noting how the corner of that particular label seems slightly warped, as if subjected to a minor dampness years ago, leaving behind a faint residue on the cardboard edge itself. The presence of this expired marker forces a pause in the cleanup routine. It is not just an old date; it is evidence of a previous inventory cycle, a ghost marking time onto what should be pristine staging material. I straighten up, letting my gaze sweep over the remaining stacks, observing how every other box bears only current or generic markings, leaving that single 2019 label to stand out like a misplaced artifact in the continuous flow of daily commerce.
