The mismatched ceramic mugs are stacked close to the counter edge where dried coffee grounds collect. Mid-morning light catches a faint smear of soap residue on the worn tile surface below them. Three of the mug bases show small, faded water rings from recent use. However, the fourth mug always displays a larger, darker ring that does not match the others in the stack's arrangement. When I try to gently shift the grouping back into an orderly pile, the mugs resist and slowly settle back into their previous positions. The inconsistent ring remains fixed on the counter surface, suggesting the pattern simply resets itself every time it is disturbed.
